My first foray into “food journalism” made it into print this issue, with a 4-page piece on Filipino delicacies.
The good old balut—duck embryo boiled to perfection—led the story, and I got some mouth-watering input from Claude Tayag, the painter-sculptor-chef I had the pleasure of meeting on my media trip.
And balut really isn’t that bad, by the way.

Tokyo was my first victim for a new section launching in the latest issue of Passport called “Paint the Town Red.”
The idea was to present the uninitiated with everything they need to know about Asia’s major cities—a sort of pocket guide with things to do, things to avoid, places to stay and eat out, and sights not to miss.
